but her instants told her to walk away. >> something told me that it probably wasn't a good idea to go in there so i went down stairs and called the nonemergency police number. >> did you think about opening it a crack. >> just to yell in there and peek my ned and say hey, knock it off. like i said, something told me not to. >> that music shut off as mysteriously as it came on at exactly 1:00 in the morning. but then police had already gotten calls about the shooting at the theater and were on the scene. as you know, police say holmes burst into the midnight showing of "the dark knight rises" and set off one gas canster and opened fire. 7 people were hit -- 71 people hit, 12 died and dozens still recovering from injuries, some critical. we will bring you updates from aurora and tell you more about the people affected by the tragedy.

those who lost their lives and those who survived and how this has changed those lives forever. we will start in aurora at the apartment where cops say the madness began. adam housely is live. he just moved within 50-yards of the apartment. adam? >> they let us move about five minutes guy. the best vantage we had so far today. they took small samples of explosives.s to g they are going to allow people back into the sur rounding apartment complexes within the hour. the windows have been knocked out. so shades are still dangling there. that is the way some of the bomb tech nations got the look inside the apartment where so much stuff was found. i was told by federal authorities it was intricate and there was all sorts of wires everywhere but the actual devices themselves were amateur

but still dangerous and the front door was set up to kill. we will listen to the explosion in a second. i will explain what that did. take a listen. [horn sounding press conference bring. >> those were the three warning signals we got. and then we had to wait about ten seconds for the explosion to happen. that allowed people to get and take cover. take a listen here in a second. you will hear it. [explosion] >> it seemed like it took forever. what that was was a water bomb set inside and it was aimed towards a circuit board that was in the kitchen. it seemed as we were told by bomb technicians that the circuit board controlled everything in the apartment to go off. it was mainly meant to burn the place down. kill the person that opened the front door and then burn the place down. from that we have video of the

actual investigation taking place. the atf and fbi agents under the tent. they have been taking out o the samples to go to the national laboratory. developing and gathering other evidence along with local authorities here, the aurora police as well. aerial pictures for you 80s dump truck took all of the divisives and explosives and incendiary type material out to the dump east of town not far from the airport where it will be destroyed by exploding part and burning part with diesel fuel. that is the good news. we come back here live. there is still a lot to do inside. the apartment will remain closed for the evening and probably throughout most if not all of tomorrow as they still have a lot of investigative work to do inside and a lot of things to bring out of the apartment complex. no one was injured. it was extremely hot today. they used a robot and they had an assessment team inside. no one injured and they were

able to secure a ton of evidence we are told. a ton of evidence that will help them show according to authorities that this was a diabolical act that was planned for a number of months. jon? >> adam housely reporting live. and good news, adam, that nobody was hurt in all of that mess. >> as police work through the delicate process of disarming the booby traps, doctors are treating those injured in the attacks. doctors say the injuries range from severe gunshot wounds to minor burns and cuts. 7 at the medical center of aurora where earlier we heard from a trauma surgeon who spoke of the challenges facing doctors and patients. >> you try to distance yourself professionally. but these are young people and young families. it is difficult not to put yourself in that situation. it going to be a long day for a lot of people.

the initial adrenaline rush of having something like this happen to the families and to the patients themselves is starting to wear off and today is the day that there is going to be realization there is going to be serious long-term issues people have to deal with. we have have staff in place as far as mental health counselors to work with the patients and their families and we are going on a case-by-case basis to try to address their needs as best we can. >> one of the injured speak out for the first time. brandon axelrod was inside the theater nine with his wife. they had gotten married just two weeks ago. he suffered only minor injuries to his arm and credits his best friend tore saving both their lives. >> josh helped me protect my wife and he got shot. the three of us together, you know, we piled on each other

and we kept each other safe. and luck or fate, whatever you want to call it, be kept us alive. >> as you heard, brandon's friend josh was shot twice and is still hospitalized. brandon about's wife denise was not hurt. the coroner's office releasing the names of 12 victims killed in th massacre. we are learning more about their stories as a make shift memorial grows. among the dead, a 6-year-old girl whose mother is still fighting for her own life at a local hospital. a sports blogger who recently wrote about surviving a deadly mall shooting in canada and a young man who was celebrating his birthday on friday and planning to celebrate his one year wedding anniversary tomorrow. hundreds of mourners attending vigils in the area to honor the victims. ten of whom actually died inside the theater according to police.

the other two died later from their injuries. anna live in the new york newsroom with more. what can you tell us? >> the 12 murder victims range in age from 6 months to 45. among those just released 32-year-old rebecca wingo and jessly childress. matt mcquinn died shielding his girlfriend from the gunfire. 23-year-old micayla was a self-described subway sandwich artist. her family agonized for hours before learning of her fate. alex sullivan, husband, brother and son. he planned to ring in his 27th birthday at the movie and celebrate his first wedding anniversary on sunday. 27-year-old john laramer was the youngest of five children.

a navy notification team contacted his family last night. 24-year-old jessica ghawi who moved to denver to pursue a career as a sports reporter was shot in the leg and then in the head. she narrowly missed a shooting at a mall in canada just last month. and 6-year-old veronica moser the youngest victim. her mother still doesn't know he her daughter was killed. she is fighting for her life. >> how is the overall community reacting, andrew lev anna? >> 20 pastors led a vigil for 350 people. some hugging and crying. a sign there read 7/20, gone not foregotten. among those attending the sir moan any was a father of a columbine victim. >> just simply being in that theater is trauma.

we are hearing so many incredible stories out of colorado from those who survived the movie theater massacre. police say the shooter fired on theater nine of the multiplex in aurora. it shares a wall with theater eight where "the dark knight rises" was also playing and bull lets did pierce that wall. witness alex molano sitting with his little sister in the upper seats. i spoke with him earlier today. >> i thought firecrackers because i saw the smoke and synchs u well with the sound in the movie. i was almost getting ready to

clap and i could see the wall rip and that is when the shots came through it and other people stood up moaning like they were in pain and running out of the theater as fast as they could. >> had to be absolutely terrifying. >> for me it was scary definitely at first but right away my body just went numb. >> he says he grabbed his sister and ran out the balcony exit and that the smoke was already there from the gas canster and it felt suffocating. he says he wishes he doesn't remember everything as well as he he does but he sees it every time he closes his eyes. the political world screeching to a halt in the wake of that deadly shooting. one of the biggest theater chains prohibits patients from wearing masks and costumes. some fans like to attend dressed as their favorite characters when going to the early screenings. the department of homeland conference callquarterback today with entertainment and shopping mall officials to make sure that something like this never happens again. molly henneberg is in ail alexandria, virginia. what are the concerns among mow i havmovie goers throughout? >> not fear. a lot of resilience and excitement about the latest batman movie and a lot of compassion for the latest victims in colorado. >> my heart goes out to the people in the tragedy. i think it is sad. i don't really like to relate a movie with someone insane like that. >> there is going to be bad and there is going to be good.

concerned for the victims and their families. the security and safety of guests and staff is the number one priority. they also reserve the right to check people's bags and backpacks before they go into the theater. for the first time we are hearing from the star of "the dark knight rises." christian bale says "words cannot express the horror that i feel. i cannot truly understand the grief of the victims and their loved ones but my heart goes out to them. warner brothers picture announcing the cast and filmmakers of "the dark knight rises" will not appear at scheduled events in mexico and japan. premier events in paris were knicksed yesterday. the studio reports it will continue with some screenings for special eves and for contest winners.

police in colorado say they have finished disarming trip wires and removing ex-please from the home of holmes. plus, the suspect james holmes due in court monday to face a long list of charges. judge jeanine pirro weighs in on the case. and investigators expanding their search for two iowa cousins missing for more than a week.

i'm jon scott in aurora colorado and this is "the fox report." the bottom of the hour, time for the top of the news. police removing all of the explosives from the apartment of the man accused in the movie theater massacre. the dangerous and pain staking work taking place all day today at the colorado home. james holmes' apartment packed with jars filled with accel rants. chemicals that would explode when mixed together and more than 30 imprevisesse improsize. holmes burst into the premier of "the dark knight rises" wearing ballistic gear and opening fire, picking off victims as they tried to escape. adding to the terror, gas canisters thrown by the suspect

filling the theater with smoke. in the end, 12 people died. dozens more hurt. police doing their best to preserve any evidence inside that apartment. adam housely is just outside the apartment reporting for us now live. adam? >> yeah, jon, in fact, they let us move closer about a half hour ago so we have a great vantage point to see the ongoing operations here. straight ahead the apartment complex on the third floor. that is where james holmes' apartment was located. of the five windows located there, four have been knocked out by authorities to get into the complex and to eventually eliminate the threat that was there. it took them about 8 hours by our watch when they first pee began the operations here -- when they first behe began the operations here. you can hear the explosion and we'll explain what happened.

[horn sounding] >> those were the three warning signals we got telling us about 10 seconds away would be an explosion. prior to that we heard fire in the hole yelled three times and then came the boom. take a listen. [explosion] >> that was basically a water bomb. it was placed inside to explode and shoot water out so it wouldn't add fuel to the fire. the water to take out an area in the kitchen that was said to be a circuit board type setup attached to the 30 makeshift grab grenades. authorities tell me they believe be what the point was is whoever entered the apartment from the frontier could have been killed and a fire started in seconds. an intricate setup but they say the explosive devices themselves were pretty amateur.

the tents actually moved this is is from a little earlier. atf agents along with fbi agents took out parts of each device. there will eventually be a prosecution in regard to explosives on a federal level but they took a little bit of each out. and then they took each device out individually after the threat was taken out and put it into a p truck. they disposed of the itemsers either burn abouting them or putting small explosive devices to set them off and that is taking place as we speak. look at this apartment complex next door. 1678 paris street. they will be allowed back in here. buses are expected in the next half hour. everybody in the su surrounding apartment complex will be allowed back in. some of the people walking in for the first time since this

all started early yesterday morning. the people in the actual complex itself won't be allowed back in tonight. probably won't be allowed back in until tomorrow night at the airiest, maybe monday. still a lot of work to go on inside the apartment. a lot of evidence to be gathered. they will go through inch by inch. they had a cha eps to get a the love evidence which will help them with the prosecution. two important notes, one, nobody was injured that is fantastic news and two they were able to save a lot of evidence that shows they say this suspect planned this out for months. jon? >> a lot of good developments there. adam housely, thank you. what possibly could have prompted this suspect to put on a gas mask and body armor and shoot up a theater full of people? here what we do know. holmes grew up in a nice neighborhood in san diego. neighbors remember him as an average clean cut quiet kid.

a report in the "l. a. times" revealing he spent time as a summer camp counselors is sellor working with underprivileged kids. his former teammates on his high school soccer team calling him "kind of a loner." he earned a degree in neurosigh sense back in 2010. continued his education at the university of colorado denver until cropping out last month and until this point holmes had never had any trouble with police. not even so much as a parking ticket. but holmes now faces a long, long list of charges at least 71 counts. one for each person killed or wounded in the deadly rampage. he is due in court for the first time on monday and now we are learning his defense team will be allowed into the theater for their own research beginning on tuesday. joining us to talk about the legal case going forward, judge jeanine pirro, host of "justice" with judge jeanine.

and he has a defense team. some of the top public defenders in the area will be representing him. >> that makes sense. someone who knows the system. he knows the law and the judge and the considers and he knows how the courts work. we don't know what is going to happen in the future but from his appearance he will be represented by the public defender. >> but there is so many witnesses i don't see anything but a conviction coming out of this case. >> there are several hurdles before you get to that case. number one, is he competent to stand trial. there will be an argument he is not competent to understand the nature of the charges or assist in his defense. number two there is a rumor going around and i'm sure a lot of people think that he will proffer an insanity defense. it doesn't work that well for most defendants i think in one or two percent of the cases. most people saying the fact that he cropped out as he was

as you just reported a smart guy are kind of a good thing might lead some people to think he had to be insane. i happen to believe in evil. he has no history of mental hospitalization or medication or any of that stuff but at the same time if the facts are against you go with insanity and there are those that think you have to be insane to do this. >> all of the preplanning doesn't that suggest a clinical and devious mind? >> the premeditation and calculation and determination and months of ordering the ammunition and all of the ballistic leggings. you can get ammunition and guns and that is not a problem. to get the armor that he got indicates that he won't wanted to protect himself. tells me this guy is thinking like a sane individual. the legal in entertainity is diving for cover rend and that is the only defense they could use here.

vanished last week are still alive. the search expanding beyond the state for the two. this announcement coming a day after authorities said they believe the girls were abducted while riding their bikes. and in texas, u.s. air force staff sergeant lewis walker sentenced to 20 years behind bars in a sex assault scandal involving one of the nation's biggest military training centers. one of 12 investigated for sexual misconduct toward at least 31 female trainees. walker convicted yesterday of rape, aggravated sexual 10 and sexual assault. overseas the fight intensifying in syria as rebels take over key neighborhoods once under government control. troops pushing back against the surge in the capital city of damascus, using mortar attacks to drive the opposition from an area that has seen some of the heaviest fighting this week. syrians trying to escape the
